SDMBA - San Diego Mountain Biking Association

We've been asked by a few of you, "What can I do about the closure of the trail in Sycamore Canyon?" Well after a couple months of meetings with various officials and the fine work of a SDMBA volunteer who happens to be an attorney we've come up with what we think is the best plan of action for now. If something better comes up we'll certainly explore that option too.

SDMBA-PRO hosted a successful and fun photo contest this past December, sponsored by Cal Coast Bicycles and Lagunitas Brewery, that brought out some fantastic photographers. This year's photo contest targeted progressive riding themes analogous to SDMBA-PRO's mission of promoting progressive mountain biking with categories such as “Freeriding” and “Airing it Out.”

The winners of the contest not only won some great prizes (pedals from Canfield Brothers, helmet from SixSixOne, components from Loaded Precision, t-shirts from iMountainBike and Dark Timber, packs from Ellsworth), but their pictures are also featured in the 2012 SDMBA-PRO Calendar! Keep your mountain biking stoke all year long, whether you're at your fridge or at work!

These calendars are FREE! If you'd like one, go to the SDMBA Forum to find out where to grab yours.

SDMBA Makes a Donation to Earth Discovery Institute
Board member Rich Julian; with members Gardner Grady, Everett Neuman and Kevin Mortensen; presented a check for $1,000 to Earth Discovery Institute to help fund the education program that is conducted at Crestridge Ecological Reserve.

This donation was ecstatically accepted by the EDI board and greatly appreciated. As Cathy Chadwick (President of EDI) pointed out, the EDI board spent hundreds of hours planning the yearly fundraiser that only took in $2k. In that perspective, SDMBA's donation of $1k is a major contribution. One thousand dollars will provide the education for one entire class (30 students) for this year at Crestridge.

2012 SDMBA Archipelago Ride Announcement
Letter from Archipelago Mastermind Rich Julien himself:

“So here we are. Every year, some part of the course gets better. Don’t ask me how, but the Gods let it be so. Every year, we get together as a tribe of mountain bikers and celebrate riding through this great place we live in. We help each other in the spirit of mountain biking. No one gets left behind. Encouragement abounds and you find that it’s more fun to help those around you. It isn’t long before you get it. Life is not just about you. The Archipelago is a slice of life…(click here to read Rich's full letter.)

The 2012 SDMBA Archipelago ride will be on Saturday April 28th, 2012, so save the date in your calendars. Mileage and elevation change will be like years past, over 40 miles of dirt and over 4000 ft of up! Sound fun, yet?

STATE OF THE UNION from SDMBA President Rod Simmons

I have often been asked “Besides trailwork, what does SDMBA do?” SDMBA’s primary function is to advocate for mountain biking opportunities. In a nutshell, we pursue legal access to trails and/or the establishment of needed trails.

Advocacy is a marathon, rather than a sprint, and the success of SDMBA rests squarely on the shoulders of its volunteers who toil for countless hours, get more doors slammed in their face than an encyclopedia salesman, but come back for more.

SDMBA-PRO Balboa Park Trail Day edit

Laying the foundations for a bike park in San Diego (figuratively, not literally... yet), SDMBA-PRO put in some sweat equity by building a bridge and reinforcing trails by the Velodrome.

Over 30 individuals braved the weather to show the city what mountain bikers can do.  We are showing them that we're not just an "I want" group, though we definitely do want a bike park in San Diego!

To get involved in or find out more about our efforts for more progressive riding opportunities and events, check us out at http://pro.sdmba.com and http://www.sdmba.com/forum or email us at pro@sdmba.com.
