Past Accomplishments
Some Past Accomplishments:
- Sweetwater Bike Park opened on January 4, 2020. 4 acres of fun including pump tracks, progressive jump lines, flow trails and more.
- New Trail! In recent years, our volunteers have completed several miles of brand new trail for all of us to enjoy.
- Black Mountain Open Space Park (City of San Diego): Over 4 miles of new trail including the Ahwee Trail, the Lilac Trail, and the Manzanita Loop which was completed in February 2017. Shovels hit the ground in early December, 2018 on the new Black Widow Trail. Black Widow construction marked the first use of a mini-excavator by SDMBA on a City of San Diego open space. This trail is slated to be completed in late 2019/early 2020.
- Mother Miguel Trail (Rock House) Realignment work was started in the Fall of 2018 and will continue in partnership with the USFW San Diego Refuges. The lower alignments are completed along with progress on habitat restoration.
- Bridge improvements at Mount Laguna Big Laguna Trail and Ahwee Trail at Black Mountain Open Space Park

- Cuyamaca Rancho State Park: Opened in September of 2015, the Cold Spring Trail features 3 miles of sustainable singletrack increasing connectivity in the park
- Del Mar Mesa:
- the ½ mile Appendix has improved connectivity to adjacent trail systems. 4 ½ miles also authorized for bikes that was previously closed.
- 200 ft. connector completed in Deer Canyon in partnership with the City of San Diego. To be opened in mid 2019 upon completion of restoration project in the valley.
- Tijuana River Valley: Access was authorized for cyclists on over 15 miles of trail that was previously closed to bikes.
- City Heights Urban Trails - 1 mile of trail completed in Spring 2017 between 54th St. and Euclid Avenue and 1/4 mile of new trail in Swan Canyon in partnership with San Diego Canyonlands and the San Diego Urban Corps thanks to a grant from the San Diego Foundation. This project provides safe routes to schools and businesses for neighbors and visitors.
- Maintenance and trail improvement projects were ongoing at Crestridge Ecological Reserve, Mission Trails Regional Park, Rancho Mission Canyon Park, Noble Canyon/Laguna, Florida Canyon, Penasquitos Canyon/Del Mar Mesa, La Costa Preserve, Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve and more
- 2017 Trail Stewardship Summit - SDMBA, in partnership with the US Forest Service, IMBA, the County of San Diego held a 4 day educational trails summit in early November which was attended by over 100 trail volunteers, partners and agency staff. Read more....
- 2019 California Trails and Greenways Conference at Viejas Resort and Casino in Alpine, CA - SDMBA supported this annual event which attracts trail professionals and dedicated volunteers from around the state to share best practices and provide networking opportunities.
- Volunteers! Organized over 40 trail work days in the 2018-19 trail season. Over the past three years, over 3000 trail work hours have been logged by over 600 individual volunteers. Volunteers have also contributed an average of 5000 hours annually helping with special events, rides, educational events, advocacy efforts, etc.
- Bike Tool Stations! 10 stations have been installed around town thanks to a grant from REI. Locations include San Dieguito River Park (2), Black Mountain (2), Mission Trails Regional Park, Daley Ranch, Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, La Costa Preserve and Sweetwater Reservoir, and Sycamore Goodan Ranch.

- Membership – SDMBA now has over 1500 members. Strong membership numbers give us tremendous political leverage as we advocate for more trails.
- Staff – In August 2015, SDMBA hired an Executive Director and the SDMBA Board approved this position to go full time in August 2016. In the Fall of 2018, SDMBA hired Ben Stone as Trails Coordinator.
- Grants! Received a $15,000 REI Grant to help contract IMBA Trail Solutions to create a Trails Plan for the Orosco Ridge Area. Read more about this project here. In 2018, SDMBA received its first Community Enhancement Grant from the County of San Diego to support the organization as well as the Sweetwater Bike Park. Another $15,000 REI Grant was received in 2018 to support the Laguna Mountain Trails Plan. 2019 Grants from REI and the County of San Diego allow SDMBA to purchase a mini excavator to assist with trail projects across the county.
- Develop a Plan! With a $5,000 grant from from the National Environmental Education Foundation, SDMBA has developed a 3 year strategic plan outlining our goals and initiatives.
- Connecting with the Community! In addition to our premier 2019 Archipelago Ride (80 volunteers and 500 riders) we had over 100 community events (rides, social events, and trail work days) this past year including the first annual Mount Laguna Trail Fest presented by Zoic Clothing in October, 2018.
